It’s the Mr Mac annual plea:
Please backup your computer and your mobile devices!
This is very easy to do with Time Machine, your Mac’s built-in backup software, all you need is an External Hard Drive.
But what about the Cloud? Can’t we backup to the Cloud? This is a common question and the answer isn’t simple.
Your iPhone can backup to the Cloud more easily than your much bigger capacity computer can. It’s a matter of getting all that data uploaded using our less-than-accomplished internet. If you have hundreds of GBs of data it is going to take days or even weeks to get it onto the Cloud. Then if you need to access the data more days to get it back.
And remember you only get 5GB for free on iCloud and then have to start paying, although it is pretty cheap.
As long as you have enough space on your computer to backup your iPhone then that’s the best way to go.
BACKUP YOUR IPHONE: Connect the iPhone (or iPad) to iTunes, select the tiny phone icon at the top left of the iTunes window and look under Summary then Backupsthen Automatically Backup and change that from iCloud to This Computer.
Click the Backup Now button and wait for it to complete.
All your Texts and other data are now backed up, so now when you backup the entire computer onto an external hard drive your data is safe!
BACKUP YOUR MAC: Follow this by backing the computer up to an External Hard Drive. Then it’s all right here in your hand should anything go wrong. You can locate deleted files and restore them, import an old iPhone to a newer one and all without needing the Cloud at all!
External Hard Drives start at $80 for 1TB in the Post Office and don’t pay extra for ‘Mac formatted’ — your Mac will reformat it for you when you select your new drive in Time Machine preferences.
Plug your External Hard Drive into the USB port.
Go to System Preferences/Time Machine and click the Select Diskbutton, choose your new drive which appears the window and off you go.
If your External Hard Drive is formatted for Windows then Time Machine will Erase it and re-format it for you, just say Yes to Erase.
While you are there make sure the button is ticked that says Show Time Machine in menu bar so you can see when the last backup was done.
