Mr Mac Update April 12

Hello There Macintosh User!

If you are getting this email you have sometime been a client of mine — Thank you for your past custom! Mr Mac Facebook:

1. Viruses, Trojans and the Mac: You may have noticed the attention in the press recently as there have been some Trojans detected on the Mac. Finally we’re getting some attention! Unwanted though it is. These aren’t actual viruses that infect the computer and send themselves to other people via your computer, but they aren’t very nice and we should be more careful now than we’ve ever been. The easiest ways to be safe and happy are 2 fold: run Software Update on your computer paying particular attention to the Java and Security updates and install the free Clam XAV virus checker and run it periodically. I do mine monthly. This page explains how to download and install Clam XAV:

2. Call Recorder for Skype: Many people are using Skype as an interview or consulting tool and need to be able to record the conversation in audio or video. Call Recorder for Skype does it very simply for $20 with a 7 day trial to see if you like it. When you open Skype it adds a floating panel with a Record button, simple and elegant.

3. The Hit List: A lot of us are list people: we make lists and work through them to get things done. The Hit List uses that method to organise everything that you do into lists and syncs with iCal too. With a free iPhone app that syncs with your Mac and a free 15 day trial to see if you like it, this could be the one for you. $50.

4. OnlyWire: As the social networking gets more prevalent there are tools that can help. This free (for a while) tool lets you send notifications to all your networks at the same time. Networks as Linkedin, FaceBook, Blogger, MySpace, Twitter, WordPress etc. There are 47 possible services you can post to all at once! Saves time and keeps your social network active easily.

5. GrowlVoice for Google Voice: This app enables Google Voice to be used from the menu bar on your Mac. This is a free service from Google that lets you hear voice messages, make calls with a Google voice number and heaps more. GrowlVoice is the missing link to make it work outside of your browser. $5.49 from the App Store.

6. Byword: If you are a writer then this might be for you: a distraction-free writing app that does all you need to keep writing. Syncs across your various computers and iPads so you can continue writing from anywhere. $10.49 from the App Store.

7. MailTab for Gmail: A freebie that puts Gmail in your menu bar if you don’t use Apple Mail for your email.

8. Free Nifty Apps: These guys offer some freebies hopefully to get you to look at their more complex stuff too. Have a look and try them out.

9. CameraBag 2: With over 100 filters and over 25 photographic tools for $23.99 this app looks like a dream for photographers and graphics people generally.

10. SketchBook Express: Some people love this! Free from the App Store it is a pro painting and drawing app for mobile devices.

11. A Reminder of My Rates: I charge $88 per hour including GST. No call-out fee or travel charge in the Byron Shire. Half hour minimum. Telephone support costs the same in 15 minute increments. Email support is still free! Please include plenty of detail in your email inquiries. Serving the Byron Macintosh community for over 10 years.

Items for Sale is a free monthly service for my Mailing List. If you want to list something for sale send me the full description/specifications and contact details. Goes out around 14th of the month. Until next time, Thank you Tommi ;>)
