Mr Macintosh Update November 10

Hello There Macintosh User!

If you are getting this email you have sometime been a client of mine — Thank you for your past custom!

1. Syncing Calendars With BusyCal: Many businesses have multiple computers without a server and need to sync their iCal calendars with several people. BusyCal does this for a one off $50 cost. http://www.busymac.com/

2. Syncing Calendars and Docs With Google Docs: Log in to Google Docs, which is a free service that lets you collaborate and share docs, calendars, presentations etc with anyone you like who has a free Google account. This service has matured nicely and is easier to use than previously; if you use Gmail already it’s simpler because your Gmail account is the login for Google Docs. Many people use it all over the cyber world. There is a link to a CNET News article which may help you decide, but its a question of giving it a go if the features suit you and your friends/staff/collaborators. https://www.google.com/accounts/ http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20023084-264.html?tag=topStories2

3. Download YouTube Videos: Right from any browser, this site is all you need. Follow the instructions and right-click the link to save the file. http://deturl.com/bookmarklet-to-directly-download-videos-from-youtube.asp

4. Microsoft Office 2011: David Pogue doesn’t like it! Walt Mossberg does. But it seems OK to me… However I will keep using Entourage for the present rather than the new Outlook until I have checked it out. http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20101013/microsoft-office-2011-mac-review/ http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/21/office-for-mac-isnt-an-improvement/?ref=personaltechemail&nl=technology&emc=cta2

5. Titanium Software: A company that gives some very good software away as well as selling some too. 3 free apps are at the link: Deeper a personalisation app, Onyx a multifunction utility and Maintenance, a System maintenance utility. Now that Cocktail has begun charging I will install Maintenance in it’s place. http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php

6. Web Capture: LittleSnapper is for grabbing a whole webpage, not just the bits you can see, and being able to annotate, edit and share with colleagues. $41 http://www.realmacsoftware.com/littlesnapper/

7. The Perfect Companion for iTunes?: TunesArt is a free, fun app that lets you display cover art and track information on your Desktop. Also can display lyrics, search iTunes without you having to switch to it and a load more. http://www.jibapps.com/products/tunesart/

8. Tunited We Stand and Listen: Make love, share music” is the tagline for the latest attempt to merge social networking and music. Tunited is a free site requiring registration as usual, then you can share playlists with others, listen to new music and put your own tracks up. Whether it will be a success is still to be seen, but it’s notable that the attempts that are being made to modernise the consumption of music aren’t coming from the old dinosaurs: the music labels. http://www.tunited.com/

9. Create fantastic Slideshows with FotoMagico: Transitions between slides, text over them, music, effects — the whole shebang! FotoMajico does it all for $30 and outputs to whatever you want: projector, computer screen or file. http://boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/

10. iPhone and iPad App Recommendations (send me yours): Scan2PDF: Take a photo of a document and it will convert it to a PDF file instantly. Free Lite version, $8.99 Pro version. Dropbox: Share files between computers and iPhone. Free Doodlebuddy: Drawing app that lets you use your photos and apply clipart, stamps and effects. Great for kids. Free and $1.19 for extras version. Gorillacam: Photography app with self timer, bubble level, rule of thirds grid, bursting, time lapse etc. Free. LED Light: torch and strobe. Free. FakeCalls: Lets you simulate an incoming call, timed to suit so you can end an annoying meeting! $1.19 SoundHound: like Shazam but you can sing or hum a melody and SoundHound finds out what you are singing/playing/listening to! Free and paid.

11. Art Created on iPhones and iPads: MobileArtCon is possible the first exhibition devoted to art made this way. http://mobileartcon.com/closing.html http://www.macworld.com/article/155162/2010/10/artfrommobileartcon.html?lsrc=nl_mwiphone_h_cbstories

12. Apple Opens the iBookstore in Australia: Accessed via the iPad iBook app, the iBookstore is finally open so you can buy the latest books to read on holiday on your iPad.

13. Video Editing Help Site: Lots of useful stuff from this guy, Larry Jordan for Final Cut Pro and iMovie. http://www.larryjordan.biz/index.php
