Mr Mac Update March/April 16

Hello There Macintosh User! If you are getting this email you have sometime been a client of mine — Thank you for your past custom!

Like the Mr Mac Facebook page for regular updates:

I am away in Blighty seeing my ancient parents in April. Away from Wednesday 30 March; back at work on Wednesday 4 May.

1. BETTER EMAIL ON IPAD AND IPHONE: Mail on iDevices isn’t that great. Enter Spark which intends to change that for free.

2. FIND THE ORIGINS OF YOUR SURNAME: A free social service to locate more information about your roots is provided by Public Profiler World Names. Enter your surname and find out where your family hails from amongst other fascinating data.

3. TWITTER USERS NOW ENJOY APPLE SUPPORT: Apple are now providing free Support via Twitter. This is a useful site even if you don’t use Twitter as many requests for assistance and their solutions are posted here.

4. FINALLY WE HAVE RANSOMWARE ON THE MAC PLATFORM!: After decades of being virus free on our beloved Macs there is finally a sort of a virus – well really ransomeware – that can encrypt your hard drive making all the data unrecoverable without paying the perpetrators for a key. But don’t panic! It only occurs if you install a particular version of Transmission, a BitTorrent client. There is already an updated version without the problem, so this is only applicable if you use Transmission.

5. TAKE CARE OF CONTACTING LOVED ONES IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: This might seem morbid but it’s all bout being prepared. For $5 per month Ghost Memo will get in touch with specified people if you haven’t responded to their email requests for contact to show you are OK. If you don’t respond they will send pre-written messages to various people asking for things to be done, passwords to be given, pets to be fed etc. 30 days free trial.

6. PHOTOGRAPHERS, WATERMARK YOUR IMAGES TO PROTECT YOURSELF: Everything gets uploaded and published online these days, but if you are a serious photographer or creator of images it makes sense to watermark them. Watermark Plus lets you add watermarks in any level of opacity anywhere on the image. It also has editing tools and can process a bunch of them in bulk. Great for preparing images for a website. Protect your intellectual property for $20…

7. ENJOY YOUR MUSIC WITHOUT ITUNES: Imagine iTunes without movies, TV shows or the App Store. This might not be want you want, but many people complain that they just want to enjoy their music without the distractions of all the extras in iTunes. Enter Gear Player which does just that and also offers support for Google Music. It is has plenty of other funky features including a transcription tool. $10 after a trial to see if you like it.

8. A VIDEO PLAYER FOR PROFESSIONALS – FOR FREE: Quickfire is a professional’s video player with amazing features like: colour correction, drawing on the frame, adding notes and annotations, adding bookmarks, taking snapshots. All for free! Amazing what people will do to support their passion.

9. PUT A MAP ON YOUR DESKTOP: MapZap is a cool utility that puts a map on your Desktop which you can customise with pictures of people in their locations or satellite images, flyover maps etc. Fun for $3.

10. A Reminder of My rates I charge $110 per hour including GST. No call-out fee or travel charge in the Byron Shire. Half hour minimum. Telephone support costs the same in 15 minute increments Email support is still free! Please include plenty of detail in your email inquiries.
