1. Mac OSX 11 La Capitan Coming Soon:
Coming later this year are revisions and updates to both the systems we use daily. The Mac operating system, although sporting a new name, is really an update to Yosemite 10.10 with many fixes and a couple of major changes. The biggest has perhaps slipped under the radar so far: search with Spotlight. Up until now Spotlight has been for searching your computer for files that you need and know are there somewhere. It is about to include searching the internet right from Spotlight. Think about that for a moment… Google? Won’t need it. No need to open a browser and go to a search engine when you can do it right from wherever you are on your computer. This is a revolution in the making. If it gets too popular then Google will see a big bite into it’s revenues. Google meanwhile has morphed from being a great search engine into a search that actually offers paid advertising masquerading as search! This is not good. They also sell your buying and browsing habits to other businesses to sell you more ads. People don’t like this do we?! 3. Security of Your Data: Not an easy sell but very important: Apple has a different take on our data to it’s major rivals. Google and Microsoft (and FaceBook) harvest your surfing and buying habits and sell this information to other businesses. They are quite open about it. 4. Consider Changing to DuckDuckDo from Google:We have all been using Google as our default search engine forever. Or Yahoo! Or Bing. But these companies collect and sell your data to other advertisers. Google makes billions from doing it – it’s got so bad that their search pages are mostly paid advertising content! Along comes DuckDuckGo who don’t collect and sell any data. The site includes a button to make it your default search engine.. https://duckduckgo.com
5. Apple Music Takes On Spotify and Pandora: Also set to launch at the end of the month is Apple’s take on streaming music. This is the growing way that people are listening to music. Don’t bother with acquiring tracks, just listen via streaming to your iDevice or on your Mac at home. Other services use free ad-funded or pro subscriber-funded models as a means to pay for the music. But of course the artist doesn’t really get much of the income stream… Apple eschews the free model, instead trying to add value with ways to let you ‘discover’ music and artists. 7. Skim for PFDs: There are lots of PDF apps out there but not many free ones. Skim is Open Source and does all that Preview and more. It can create notes from PDFs, let you colour highlight, annotate and heaps more. http://skim-app.sourceforge.net
8. Remotely View iOS Device Cameras on your Mac: AirBeam does that thing. You need the app for your Mac which is free and then a similar app for you iOS device which is $4. The reviews say that it can occasionally be a bit unreliable but for 4 bucks what the hell! 9. Print Windows in Finder: If you need to print the lists of files and folders, perhaps down several levels, well hard luck! Not possible on the standard Mac OSX which is a little strange. Enter Print Window which lets you do just that, with a lot of options in terms of how far down you want to go and what formatting you need.
