1. BEWARE THE ONLINE SCAMS:

A rising number of my clients are getting caught by online scams, either pop-up windows on websites or from dodgy emails, called phishing. Please be aware that any pop-up window on your computer purporting to warn you of problems with your computer is a scam. They are getting very good at what they do so we need to be ever more vigilant. The page below tells you steps to take to secure your computer, but remember what may seem obvious but is easy to forget: Never give control of your computer over to a stranger and never give them your credit card details. If you are unsure call me! http://www.mrmacintosh.com.au/243-scams-and-security-bite-deep.html

2. PHOTOS DUPLICATE CLEANER: Photos is now the default application on all Macs for managing your photos library, taking over from iPhoto. Not everyone likes it as much as iPhoto but what can you do? This free app seeks out duplicates and lets you delete them. It’s free and works well. http://www.duplicatephotosfixer.com/PhotoCleaner.aspx

3. USING A VPN TO HIDE YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: So you want to access Netflix in the USA or the BBC in the UK? Or Russian or Uzbekistan TV? You need a Virtual Private Network or VPN to do this. The software hides your location from the server you are logging into and allows you apparently be logging in from the country of your choice. You may still need an account from that country for the service you want, like Netflix US. There are many choices of VPN out there and Express VPN are pretty good and have very useful online chat to help you set it up if you run into problems. Cost is from US$10 to US$13 per month depending on whether you pay monthly or annually in advance. A VPN also hides your computer’s origin so there are privacy issues that it helps with too. Some people use a VPN to be anonymous online all the time. https://www.expressvpn.com

4. FILE MANAGEMENT FOR IPAD LIKE FINDER FOR MAC: The holy grail for iPad users is to try and get it to replace their Mac while travelling. But this can be hampered by the different interface to the Mac that we are used to. Enter FileApp for free and it’s companion computer application, iMazing which costs US$50. Between them they really turn the iPad into an easy to manipulate device, files are simple to copy across and manage. Well worth the cost. A good iPad with plenty of storage is essential too if you want to replace your laptop. http://fileapp.com https://imazing.com

5. TOONTASTIC, FOR THE KIDS: Google often comes up with free software, usually with an online element and this is in that vein. Toontastic is a video editing and creation tool that also does drawing and animation and lets you publish online, all for free. https://toontastic.withgoogle.com

6. COMPRESS AND OPTIMISE IMAGES: Squash concentrates on one thing and does it well. It compresses images for the web without losing any quality but reducing file size considerably. Costing US$20 it could be a simple solution to keeping your web file size under control. https://www.realmacsoftware.com/squash/

7. CONTROL AUDIO ROUTING INSIDE YOUR MAC: If you do audio work on your computer then this might be for you. Loopback routes any audio from any audio device to any application giving complete control over your sound. It is US$100 after a free trial to see if you like it so only for those serious about sound. https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/

8. SCAN PRINTED PHOTOS USING YOUR IPHONE CAMERA: More Google cleverness, PhotoScan helps you to take a photo of a physical picture, crop it, join several together and improve the quality. Being from Google it’s free online. https://www.google.com/photos/scan/

9. BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY WEATHER APP: There are heaps of weather apps out there but this one is from the source! http://www.bom.gov.au/app/

10. A Reminder of My rates I charge $110 per hour including GST. No call-out fee or travel charge in the Byron Shire. Half hour minimum. Telephone support costs the same in 15 minute increments Email support is still free! Please include plenty of detail in your email inquiries.
