Mr Mac Update August 14

Hello There Macintosh User!

If you are getting this email you have sometime been a client of mine — Thank you for your past custom! Like the Mr Mac Facebook page for regular updates: https://www.facebook.com/mrmacbyronbay

I am now able to accept payment via VISA or MasterCard Credit Cards, with no surcharge

1. Ad Blocking!: A huge issue for some of us are the ads that pop up in your browser at any time, many of which look like genuine problems that need fixing! This Shareware ad blocker works well. Free but will occasionally ask you for a donation which seems like a fair go if it has made your life easier… Open this link in the browser that you want to install Ad Block and follow the prompts. https://getadblock.com

2. An Alternative to Adobe: The only way to use Photoshop, Illustrator and the rest of the Adobe suite is by monthly subscription. This doesn’t suit everyone. Enter Affinity Designer which promises to be an amazing high end graphics program which can also import your Adobe files easily. Free Beta available for download now and then a reasonable $50. Worth checking out if you’re a graphics person. https://affinity.serif.com

3. Free, Encrypted iPhone Calls: Signal is the first Open Source encryption for the iPhone. If you feel that the surveillance issues are becoming a bit much or just don’t want Big Brother listening in then this may be for you. http://www.wired.com/2014/07/free-encrypted-calling-finally-comes-to-the-iphone/

5. Pokemon Comes to i-Devices: This is a big deal for Pokemon lovers, of which there are millions globally. Nintendo, the makers of Pokemon have always refused to embrace the iOS world leaving the way open for someone else to create a clone game. This has now been done, called Micromon for $1 it will make many kids and other people happy. http://www.tuaw.com/2014/08/07/a-pokemon-clone-is-making-a-killing-on-the-app-store-right-now/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/micromon/id687212362?mt=8

6. Yosemite Coming Soon: Due in the northern autumn, our spring, the latest operating system from Apple will be called Yosemite and will take over from Mavericks 10.9. There are a heap of new features, the most useful seems to be being able to write a document or email across any of your devices seamlessly. Meanwhile Wired magazine is running a series of articles highlighting the new features. This one on the Mail app: http://www.wired.com/2014/08/os-x-yosemite-beta-mail/

7. Bending the Light: An upcoming film that will interest particularly photographers is about lens making and the magic of photography. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpH2_LdYzbc

8. thislife: As an alternative to iPhoto and other cloud storage systems, thislife promises to collect your photos from all your devices plus your social media and gather them together, making them available to you from any of your devices. It’s an attempt to rationalise the many sources of our photos and store them in the cloud so we can access them anytime. Free for 2,500 images, $60 per year includes videos and 100GB, $140 per year for 400GB. Of course you would need a good internet connection…. https://www.thislife.com

9. Items for Sale: Is a free service. If you want to list something for sale send me the full description/specifications and contact details. 10. A Reminder of My Rates: I charge $110 per hour including GST. No call-out fee or travel charge in the Byron Shire. Half hour minimum. Telephone support costs the same in 15 minute increments. Email support is still free! Please include plenty of detail in your email inquiries. Serving the Byron Macintosh community for over 14 years. Until next time, Thank you Tommi ;>) 0418408869
