Percentage Points and Stats

There is always talk of how much of the personal computer market Apple enjoys; we used to hear 2-3% years ago, but as always there are lies, damn lies and statistics. Apparently in the USA for machines costing over US$1000, Mac has over 80% of the market according to this Barron’s Tech Trader blog report who then say it has “22% in the retail channel”.The melt-down of this is what we have always known: the corporate market who buy hundreds or thousands of cheap PCs don’t go near Macs, but the normal sized small businesses certainly do as do retail or home buyers. And they do more and more as time goes on and the ‘halo effect’ of iPhone usage teaches die hard PC owners that there is a simpler alternative.Lots of interesting stuff in this report on Apple COO Tim Cook‘s interview at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference:http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2010/02/23/apple-coo-cook-says-it-is-worlds-largest-seller-of-digital-contentIf that interested you listen to the audio webcast of the whole thing:http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/goldmansachs10
